ICAD 2022 - Weeks 8 & 9

I had to play a little catch up for the last week.  Trying to fit time in this last week while we were getting ready for the kids to come for the weekend was a bit fruitless.  I haven't taken the group picture yet either, but thought I should get this post in the books.

50/61 - Detour

I used a tangle called Tootles by Jennifer Hohensteiner as this tangle is detouring off the page and saying "tootles".

51/61 - Space

Another tangled card with the tangle names Starawn by Judy Murphy.  Microns and watercolor pencils.

52/61 - Together

Yes, these two weeks are tangle-heavy.  This card uses Hart-Ellie, Huggins, and 'Nzeppel.  Done with Microns and watercolor pencils again.

53/61 - Dusk or Dawn

This is a mixture of actual watercolors and watercolor pencils.  Based on a photo from the internet.

54/61 - Wander

Another tangle yet again.  Wanderline by Tomas Padros.  In this case drawn as one continuous line with the rectangles only colored in with paint pens.

55/61 - Snowflake - kind of a cheat card as this was a doodled smaller index card from my stash that I thought could pass for a summer snowflake so I just glued it to the 4 x 6.

56/61 - Forest

Not a true tangle - just a bunch of triangular trees drawn with a Micron and colored with colored pencil and Stabilo markers.

57/61 - Luminous

I used silver and gold gel pens on this mandala hoping it would look luminous.

58/61 - Ultramarine

I had a picture in my head that I was going for and this is almost there, but not quite right.  Still, I kind of like the way it came out.  I used Shuttle Art gel crayons on this activated with a waterbrush.

59/61 - Briolette

This is one of those prompts that needed a little investigating as I wasn't quite sure what "briolette" was.  It is a triangular faceted cut of a jewel.  You can barely see that by keeping the base of the triangles the same size and varying their height gives a slightly curved diagonal line which would show up more clearly on a three-dimensional stone rather than on paper. Done in metallic marker and gel pen.

60/61 - Happiness

Happiness is watching the butterflies visit the zinnias in the yard at this time of year.  Done in watercolors and noting that watercolors do not perform as well on index card paper as they would on watercolor paper, thus the hatchy-patch butterfly which was supposed to be a swallowtail.  Still, I'm pleased with the leaves and flowers and the way they came out.

61/61 - Prism 

Off prompt unless you want to consider this a scattered butterfly rainbow caused by a prism.  Just drawn with a Micron and colored with watercolor pencils.

Now I have to catch up posting all of these cards on Instagram.  I'll be back with the collection pictures in a day or so.  

ICAD 2022 - Weeks 6 & 7

Once again I forgot to post the previous week so I'll combine weeks 6 & 7 in this post.

36/61 - Mysterious (Off Prompt)

Derwent Watercolors and General's Watercolor Pencils

I saw a picture of this hummingbird and had just gotten the watercolors and wanted to give them a try.

37/61 - Gelato

Certainly this isn't the edible kind but rather the medium that I used for this resembles the gelatos used in mixed media.  This product happens to be Shuttle Art Gel Crayons which have the same properties except for archival quality.  I bought them to use with the grandsons.  They are like very creamy crayons and you can blend them on the paper with water which I did in this case.  I have found that if you don't and the application is heavy, the product may flake off and it will become activated wherever it falls (such as the table or the floor - ask me how I know).

38/61 - Turquoise

I took whatever turquoise products I had in my bag and used them to make marks along with some asemic writing.

39/61 - Geometric

Falling back on my Zentangles, I used a tangle called Graticula by Lucy Farran.  I used Microns, watercolor pencils, and paint pens.

40/61 - Ink

I did some pre-PrimeDay ordering of some school supplies and I split a box of pastel highlighters with Rachel.   I figured that they're filled with ink.  I added the spirals with Stabilo markers in brighter colors so it didn't just look like a bag of jelly beans someone left in a hot car.

41/61 - Verdant

Pulled out a variety of green markers and paint pens for this one.

42/61 - Ombre

So, out of the box we go again.  Ombre is not only a variation of color, but a 17th century 3-player card game consisting of 4 suits.  Red - cups and coins.  Black - swords and clubs.

43/61 - Scrabble (Off Prompt)

I pondered this for a while and while I was I was moving things around on my workspace decided to put some of the "stuff" I found together.  I started with a card that had been painted with acrylics, cut some leaves from a Post-It pad, added a strip of washi tape, and then added the origami butterfly.

44/61 - Whimsical

On one of my Pinterest pages I collect fonts that I like and will add them to one of my art journals.  That is where I found this cute bird font.  I drew the letters in Micron and then added the color with the pastel highlighters.

45/61 - Travel

Most of our travel takes place within the State of New Jersey - The Garden State.

Shuttle Art gel crayons, paint pens, Crafter's Square white marker.

46/61 - Orange

What is orange and spineless?...............Jellyfish.  Done with paint pens and watercolor pencils using the tangle Zenjellies by Jenna Black.

47/61 - Spin or Spinner

Falling back on Zentangling again with the tangle Tripoli using Microns and watercolor pencils.

48/61 - Chevron

I thought that I could use this washi tape to make chevrons by cutting it into small pieces and turning one upside down and placing them next to each other........not so.  The only way to get the angle was to place them horizontal and vertical to each other which gave me this disjointed chevron pattern that I hope doesn't give you a headache.

49/61 - Wallpaper, or in my case off prompt in recycled envelope paper.

I was attempting to get the bokeh effect with the background in watercolor pencil but I may have overdone it.  The flowers are all created from pieces of two envelopes that I had saved.  What took the longest here was cutting out the flower petals.  Adding them to the card was fairly quick as I have retained my tweezer skills from when I used to assemble computer chips as a part-time job back in my college days.  Fortunately these did not require the same precision required then.

Twelve more days to go which will be busy days for me as I have a bunch of appointments in the next two weeks and we'll be getting ready for a family visit here with both the kids and their little ones.  So, I may take a little longer to finish this challenge, but I still intend to get it done.  

ICAD 2022 - Week 5

This is the second post for today as I realized when I was typing it up that last week's was still in my draft folder. 

We've had two multi-day visits from our daughter and her family at the condo the past two weeks so life has been a little topsy-turvy.  GS2 is a very early riser and rising early is not in my wheelhouse so I've been both elated to have them and exhausted at the same time.  I haven't posted much because I've also been trying to catch up on a few of these cards...... which I finally did thank goodness.  I'll share some pictures from our visits in a later post.  But now, on with ICAD Week 4.

Day 29/61 - Neon

I don't remember the name of the tangle that I used on this, I just know that I used a selection of neon highlighters and Stabilo markers.  

30/61 - Magicial

There are two cards for this prompt because I was using the first one as an audition card to see what each kaleidoscope pencil would give me in the form of a tree.  Then I couldn't decide which one looked more magical - all the colorful trees, or the forest scene.  

31/61 - Postmark

I took a little liberty with the cancellation motif to create these using Crafter's Choice metallic markers that can be found at the Dollar Tree (which charges $1.25 now).  How did I get those lines to echo so well, I cut a pattern/stencil from another index card and added pencil lines at 12, 3, 6, and 9 first, and then evenly between those two more times.  The metallic markers completely covers the pencil marks.

32/61 - Sky

An acrylic blue sky with credit card smeared iridescent white clouds and some paint pen tree tops.

33/61 - Quatrefoil or Ogee

Well, this has both.  Micron marker and watercolor pencils.

34/61 - Rooster

I had the red, white, and blue background ready to go on Independence Day before I realized that the prompt was Rooster.  (Which we joked we were going to nickname Maverick because he rises so early and has not yet got the concept of quiet in the morning.)  The sun was cut from another card, painted with paint pen, and then I drew the rooster and added the lettering before gluing to the background.

35/61 - Yellow

I saved a picture that my cousin Janis had taken at Assateague Island National Park which she posted on Facebook recently.  That became my inspiration for this card, but it doesn't come close to doing justice to her photograph.  She lives near Assateague and has shared countless beautiful photos of the wild horses there.  She, and the few ladies she hangs with, do not approach the horses and follow all the rules of the park.  Her camera lens is one of those very powerful (and large) ones that can get closer to the animals without getting physically close.  Apparently there is an app that helps them to identify the horses and their bands by name which is very interesting.  Recently one of the male horses on the island had to be relocated to Texas because he was deemed to be dangerous due to unfortunate human contact by those that do not know how to follow the rules.  People can use the beach there and if they don't follow protocol, like not feeding the horses and securing the food that they bring, the horses sometimes are able to get into coolers and bags and that's not good for them.  And people seem to forget that these are wild animals and can get spooked and will spin and kick to defend themselves if they feel threatened if you get too close.  The horse that had to be removed had kicked someone before and was getting more aggressive trying to protect his band.  Hopefully he will thrive in his new home, though he won't have the beach anymore to roam.

ICAD 2022 - Week 4

19/61 - Selvedge

Selvedge is the the finished edge of fabric that keeps it from fraying and this is what I used to make those three white puffed rolls. All of this on the card comes from the waste that was created when I was making masks at the beginning of the pandemic. I took the cut threads that were trimmed off and since I didn't have the correct product, I sandwiched the threads between two sheets of wax paper and sewed through it to hold the thread together. Then I peeled off the wax paper - not easy, but a tweezer helped. I took the selvedge pieces from the fabric and rolled it up, taking hand stitches along the bottom as I did to keep it together. I had planned on taking some of these and making a shadowbox but never got around to it so they came in handy today.

20/61 - Ouija Board

I used a tangle called Contacted.  Colored with paint pens and watercolor pencils.

21/61 - Solstice

I used a tangle on this one called Soluna.  It's a combination of the sun and a sliver of moon on the left side.  Paint pens and Stabilo markers.
