Scribble Picnic - PICKET FENCE

I love picket fences.  We have a short stretch of picket fencing in our backyard that started out with the traditional wooden white fence, but over the years the wood deteriorated and rather than spend a lot of time repairing and repainting, since it was not a lengthy endeavor, we opted to replace it with a vinyl fence and I'm glad we did.

My painting is not of our yard though.  It was inspired by a photo on a blog I follow from many years back.  The fence is not your traditional white fence, it's the natural light wood color.  Perhaps they hadn't gotten around to painting it yet.  Perhaps they never will.  It will do it's job one way or another.

I'll be heading over to Michael's now to see all the lovely fences everyone is featuring this week. You can also check them out by clicking here.

  2. This is so pretty Lorraine - picket fences always need flowers and shrubs around the base to make them look special.
Is that a Celtic cross - 'sun cross' - on the wall?

Cute watering can too, reminding me to get out and water as it will be in the mid-80's today!

    Happy day - Mary

    1. I think it is some kind of cross and the building might be a church of some sort with the niche next to the door.

  3. Somehow the picket fence brought to mind flowers and gardens in everyone's post. Is it that we have Spring on our minds or is that just the natural place to find a picket fence ... lovely picture, Lorraine ...

    1. Picket fences are somewhat romantic don't you think?

  4. Dear Lorraine, I love this. It is very sweet and beautifully rendered. BRavo. I also love your lil' write up. Yes, I think a lot of people have gone to vinyl fences which aside from not deteriorating, also stay clean longer. At first, when they came out, I did not like them but now they are my favourites actually as so many of the wooden ones around here are in such bad shape.
Funny what you say about the unpainted picket fence as I was just wondering the same with some elderly folks down the street who have an unpainted one.

    1. In the town I grew up, a couple of blocks from our house was a house with a bright blue picket fence. Although my favorite color is blue, the fence always seemed a little out of place. Imagine my surprise when I "grew up", got married and moved away to find another house with a bright blue picket fence not too far away. That one seemed a lot more whimsical because of the plants like sunflowers and cornstalks that grew inside the fence.

    1. Had I thought of this a few weeks ago it could have qualified for the watering can theme too!

  6. I like picket fences too, but never had one because just the thought of painting it (and keeping it that way) was more than I wanted to tackle.

    1. Our first one had some pickets that just rotted away from the stringers, so it was a good choice to replace with vinyl or else spend a lot of time keeping the rot at bay.

  7. I always liked the idea of a picket fence. We had a short stretch of one up for awhile after we were married, but it is long gone now. Too big of a yard to enclose it all, so the fence was purely decorative. I think hubby tired of mowing around it! :-)

  8. A lovely and well-suited piece for the picnic prompt, Lorraine.

I've seen picket fences in various colours over the years. We don't see them so much anymore — around these parts, they are replaced with tall, plain wooden fences with no gaps for privacy or Colorbond metal sheet panels (no gaps) which don't deteriorate or need upkeep.
