Scribble Picnic - Rabbit (With Spring Flowers on the Side)

Goodness, that title almost seems like a menu entry, but don't worry I won't be serving any rabbit this Easter. I do hope that the "hot" weather we're having doesn't toast the flowers too soon though.

This Scribble Picnic RABBIT might be a chocolate bunny camouflaged to hide amongst the spring flowers so as not to get eaten.  Inspired by a ceramic bunny in blue and white that I used to have, I chose to use different flowers and colors.

I was half tempted to use the cracked glass technique on this to make it look like a well-worn ceramic piece and had it been done smaller, and I could have used it on a card I probably would have, but to keep in the sketch pad it didn't seem prudent to use all that embossing powder.

Both HWNSNBP and I are amazed at the amount of flowers that have bloomed in this garden this spring. We have not planted anything new here in a long while so it appears that the plants are happy and are spreading their happiness throughout.  Besides the crocuses and daffodils which are bulbs, we have scilla and chionodoxa springing up in the oddest places.  I know those were originally corms when they were planted, but we're thinking that they also will self seed if they are in the right conditions.

We even have some pansy and Johnny-jump-up volunteers on the pathway.

Today I noticed that the Confederate violets are blooming along with the spring beauty.

And I spied a few yellow wood violets although they're getting fewer and harder to find.

The bluebirds are regulars to the suet feeder these days.  They wait patiently for their turn while the other birds feed.  They happily grab up what might have fallen to the ground.

And I'm happy to report that the nest cam does indeed show a nest in the making.  There was a lot of wing waving and in-an-out-check-it-out by both the Mr. and Mrs. But you can never be certain that they're going to nest there until they get that nest built.  By the way, HWNSNBP has decided to name them Phil and Cora.  Extra points if you know who Phil and Cora were.  I'll be posting updates on the nesting progress throughout the spring and early summer.  Hopefully we'll get a couple of clutches again this year.

Okay, enough about the flowers and birds, it's back to RABBITS and time to mosey on over to Dotty Hill to check out what's down, or up from the rabbit hole!  Click here to join me as I visit all the Scribble Picnickers this week.  And should you care to join in next Wednesday, the theme is LADDER.

You do have an amazing garden, wonderful that they are taking care of themselves at the moment. So pretty! No flowers here yet.

  2. "that title almost seems like a menu entry"
--Haha, I did have to laugh there, Lorraine, as that is exactly what I thinking too. Too funny.

Your piece is really great and so 3D as well. It toally reminds me of English foil wrapped chocolate bunnies you can;t find here in the US really. In fact, I thought it was! I coudln;t figure out what it was made of until clicking on the main image bigger and realising you had drawn it on the sketchpad itself, which before, i thoght was jsu tin the background of the garden! Whoa. Very well done. A lovely Spring like Easter addition to the theme. I was hoping someone would do an Easter one like this. Great job.

    BTw, what does HWNSNBP mean?

    1. Thanks Michael - HWNSNBP is the abbreviation for He Whose Name Shall Not Be Published, otherwise known as my husband. He is known by many variations of his name depending on how people fit into his life. This is why he is responsible for signing all our Christmas cards!

  3. I had to look twice to make sure this was on paper rather than being a ceramic rabbit propped up among your flowers! So pretty!
Isn't Spring wonderful with all the flowers showing up again? Saw our first bluebird of the year this morning, and there was a wren in the backyard a few days ago.

    1. Thanks joeks! I know there are many beautiful flowers during the summer, but there's something about the spring that makes them ever so much more special.

    1. Thank you Christine. I only wish that they lasted longer, but then again, the fact that they do not makes them more special to me.

  5. What a beautiful bunny you have made! And I love seeing your gorgeous flowers in the garden (and in the walkway!) I just had a look around the garden today, and almost all of our spring bloomers are done--no pretty flowers to hide the Easter eggs in! Wow, lucky you to have a nest cam! Our house wrens have been locked out of the garage this year, and we are keeping the mailbox on the wall by our front door closed. They actually set up housekeeping for the first time in the little nest house we put out for them about 10 years ago.

    1. Thanks Sara. I have a friend at work who had some birds build a nest in the spring-flowered wreath she had hung on her front door!

  6. I thought it was actually 3D, like you wrapped something into the shape of a bunny, not a drawing, it totally fooled me. guess being among real flowers helps the illusion. great take on the theme.

    have a lovely day.

    1. Thank you lissa. It was a last minute decision to take the picture outside. I owe it all to the good weather we've been having this week.

  8. Love pink and purple together (like my blooming right now tulips) and I wouldn't mind a lovely foil wrapped chocolate rabbit right this moment. Of course then there's the big decision - should I bite the ears off first?

I see, like me, you love your garden and visiting birds! That Mr. Eastern Bluebird is so handsome. . . . . . just know Mrs. must be nearby.

    Happy Easter weekend - Mary

  11. That rabbit is amazing, so dimensional looking - and full of Spring delight, along with all those lovely flowers. No scilla here the last time I was out, but the daffodils along the roadsides are all giving way to tulips. Lovely to see Mr Blue, and to know that you should have little ones again this year.

    1. The nest is all done I think, but she hasn't started laying yet. Any day now I presume. Wish we could have tulips. I love them to look at, but the deer love them for lunch!
