Surprise - First Chick

Surprise it was today.  The first chick hatched and I was able to get a photo.  (click on it to make it bigger)

Bluebirds are meticulous when it comes to keeping a clean nest.  They remove all of the shell and take it away from the nest cavity/box so as not to attract predators.  They will also remove the fecal sacks that the chicks will produce to keep the nest clean.

I'm going to let them be for a couple of days until all the eggs hatch.  We're expecting rain tomorrow and much colder temps on Sunday and I don't want to spook Mrs. Blue into leaving them unprotected and cold.  I'd worry too much.

  1. How exciting!! Isn't it an ugly little thing. I was only just reading somewhere about the differences between the chicks that are born almost ready to go, like ducklings, and the ones that need to be fed in the nest for a couple of weeks. You must be so thrilled - I hope you have a nest full of little chicks in a couple of days.

  2. When I had a wreath on my back door, a nest quicky appeared. We literally roped off the entrance and insisted that all coming in or going out be done through the garage's overhead door. I'd do it again in a heartbeat!!

I wish the best for that little one and the rest of the family.

Your blog is so pretty. All your flower photos are gorgeous. I love the Lilacs and Lily of the Valley.
